The 21:09 A3 at Star Pelaw over 435m last night was one of those races that genuinely tests what prediction models are for. The model had Knackstar (trap 2) as its top pick, with Balrobuck Tom (trap 1) as second. Hawkfield Lexi in trap 4 was rated dead last — sixth pick in a six-runner field. She won.
Hawkfield Lexi went off at 3/1, quickened away from the traps, took a middle-to-wide path, and led from pillar to post. The run comment says it all: "QuickAway, MidTWide, AlwaysLed." In a 435m sprint, if a dog pins its ears and goes from the gun and no one catches her, the pace figures from a previous run mean nothing on the night.
Balrobuck Tom, the 1.91 favourite and the model's second pick, ran his race in second — "Rails, SecondFrom1" — beaten a length and three-quarters. Knackstar, the model's top selection, was bumped and crowded going into bend two ("Rails, SlightlyCrowded2") and finished fourth. The interference is the piece worth noting. Knackstar did not run badly — he was taken out of the race before it started properly.
Vixons Mercedes in trap 6 came from off the pace to grab third ("SlowAway, WideStt, MiddleRunIn"), which is the kind of run that gives closers a chance when the race is set up honestly. Dairyland Champ faded from halfway and was taken out for a qualifying run.
What does this race tell us? Hawkfield Lexi is a front-runner whose early pace the model may have underrated — when the race is run on her terms and no one pressures her, she can win at this level. Knackstar is worth following if he gets a cleaner run at a 435m sprint. The interference cost him any realistic chance of showing what he could do. If he comes out next time in a cleaner draw, the model will likely rate him highly again, and for good reason.
