The 19:39 OR at Monmore was the race of Thursday night for the wrong reasons. Simpson Sniper (trap 1) won at a starting price of 13.00, having been rated sixth of six by the model before the race. The predicted winner Holding Aero (composite 58, trap 3) finished fifth. The second pick Signet Nayla — priced at 2.10 by the betting market, the nearest thing to a favourite in the race — came home last.
The run comments explain most of it. Signet Nayla's comment reads "Crd1&1/4" — crowded at the first bend and again at the quarter. Holding Aero had it worse: "CrdStt&1&1/4" — caught in traffic from the start, then blocked at the first and quarter-mile markers. At 480 metres at Monmore, getting severely checked in the opening strides does not leave time for recovery. By the time both dogs found clear running, the race was over.
Simpson Sniper, meanwhile, had a dream trip. The comment is clean: "QAw,Rls,ALed" — quick away from the traps, found the rails, and led throughout. With both of the predicted frontrunners tied up in traffic behind her, she was never challenged and won in a time of 28.87 which is competitive for OR grade at this trip.
Good Maverick deserves a mention too. Predicted fifth and returned at 34/1, she ran into a pocket of clean air when the pile-up ahead of her cleared and picked up third. Her true form is considerably weaker than that result suggests.
The uncomfortable conclusion is that the model read this race correctly. Holding Aero and Signet Nayla were the two best dogs on the data — they simply could not get out. Holding Aero in particular is worth watching closely in her next start. She was checked multiple times from the gate, checked again mid-race, still ran on to beat most of the field, and her composite score of 58 remains the highest in whatever race she lines up in next. If she gets a clean run, the Monmore OR grade should be well within her reach.
