The model had Devista at the bottom of the Valley A3 (11:45) — sixth out of six. The market had her at the top, backing her into 2.10 favouritism. Devista won, and the gap between those two assessments is worth unpacking.
The race unfolded quickly. Devista from trap 6 broke well, reached the rail side by the third bend, and led from there, winning in 28.73. Optic Bucks in trap 2 — our top selection with a compositeScore of 51 — finished second in 28.81, running a solid race but never quite getting to the front-running winner. Quivers Quest (trap 1, 2.63 SP) finished third after being checked at bend 3.
The model's case against Devista was structural. Wide traps at 460m A3 at Valley historically underperform, and without the positional advantage that inside draws provide, dogs from traps 5 and 6 tend to give up too much ground at the first bend. But Devista's early pace effectively rewrote the script. The run comment tells it plainly — EP,LedFr3,Wide — she didn't wait for the bend to take effect. By getting there first and commandeering the rail position herself, she converted what should have been a positional liability into a front-running opportunity. The race became about maintaining a lead rather than recovering from a deficit.
Swift Lulee (predicted second) had a slow start, was bumped at bend 3, and never got competitive despite a suitability profile that should have had her closer. Swift Backround (predicted third) was checked at the same incident and faded late.
Optic Bucks ran honestly in defeat. A second at 4.00 when the model had her as favourite is a fair result, and the compositeScore of 51 looks accurate for this grade — she was the second-best horse in the race, just beaten by something that produced a perfect front-running performance.
The lesson here: when a dog has genuine early pace, the structural draw penalty for wide traps can occasionally be negated entirely by getting to the bend first. Devista is worth watching next time up the handicap. Optic Bucks remains one to follow at similar or slightly easier company.
