Travel Safe is the standout selection in tonight's headline OR race at Newcastle (19:27). The five-runner field contains a cluster of local Newcastle specialists stepping into Open grade for the first time, but they face an opponent who has been doing all her racing at the top level and doing it well.
The numbers tell the story quickly. Travel Safe's last five performance ratings from Open grade read 97, 96, 94, 88, 81. That is consistent elite form in the highest grade of greyhound racing. Her speed rating of 72 leads this field by 18 points — a gap that is enormous in relative terms. The next-best speed in the race is 54. She is a pure Closer, which suits Newcastle's long home straight well; she does not need to scrap for position at the first bend and can build her run from behind without incident.
The one legitimate question is that she has never raced at Newcastle before, and all her recent form has been over the 435-metre trip at Star Pelaw, not 480 metres. No track or distance suitability data exists for this combination. For any other greyhound that would be a serious concern. For one with three consecutive Open grade wins and a performance ceiling near 100, it barely registers.
Trap 2 gives her one of the two best structural positions at Open grade Newcastle over this distance, winning 21.2% from 66 runs. Her nearest danger is Fabulous Show in trap 3, who has five wins from eight career starts at this exact track and distance. That is a 63% course and distance win rate and cannot be ignored. Fabulous Show is a front-runner, though, and Travel Safe's closing ability should have enough to reel her in if she hits the front.
The rest of the field are taking a significant step up in class. Not Like Us (trap 1) arrives from A2 having posted an 88 performance rating, which is excellent at that level but a different proposition against Open rivals from the weakest trap in the race.
Travel Safe to win; Fabulous Show the each-way insurance.
