Tonight's OR sprint at Star Pelaw is 245 metres of trap position politics. Six runners, 18:04, and the one dog with the clearest form case is also saddled with the worst draw in the race.
Vixons Cocktail (trap 1) has shown consistent ability at this course and distance. She clocked 14.66 when second here on May 30th, then 14.74 second again a week earlier, and 14.80 the week before that. Three consecutive placed runs at the exact same course, grade, and distance. For a 245m sprint, that form is about as relevant as it gets.
The problem is trap 1 at OR 245m here. In 544 races at this distance, trap 1 has produced just 13.2% of winners. Trap 6 has produced 27.4% -- the rail disadvantage over the minimum trip is real and consistent. Getting a clean break is everything when the race is over in under 15 seconds.
Sadele occupies trap 6 tonight but is entirely out of her depth, running in this OR grade on the back of D2 form. Her speed rating of 2 speaks for itself. So the structural trump card is held by a dog who cannot use it.
The wild card is Cazzers Ellie in trap 5. She has an outstanding first-bend rating, was clocking 4.36 sectionals at Monmore over 480m, and boasts the best early pace score in the field. But she has never raced over 245m, all her form comes from middle distances, and she fell badly in her last start. She could blast the field, or she could run completely green.
Vixons Cocktail is the selection on form, but this is a genuinely speculative race. A clean break from trap 1 is the prerequisite for everything.
