The 18:11 open race at Doncaster is built around one dog. Drombeg Abby (trap 4) holds a twelve-point composite lead over the rest of this field, the widest margin on tonight's card, and her open-race form backs it up completely. She clocked 28.19 when second over course and distance two starts back, and her recent fourth over 483m reads better than it looks: she was going well when badly impeded at the third bend. Performances consistently landing in the sixties and seventies put her in a different bracket to this opposition.
Final Furlong (trap 5) is the model's second pick, though her recent runs raise questions. Fifth last time over 275m sprints and knocked over at the first bend the start before that. At her peak she's posted a 73 performance figure at open race level, but the trap 5 draw wins just 13.9% at this configuration and she needs a clean passage to threaten.
The more interesting danger may come from Fourpenny Glider (trap 2), who ran a sharp 28.20 at invitational grade two starts back and was unlucky in running last time. He closes well and has a workable draw at 23.3%. Final Sapphire (trap 1) is one for the future too, her form figures climbing with every run: 32, 53, 59, 59, 63, 72. This is her first test at open race level though, and that's a significant step up from A4.
Drombeg Abby's consistency at this level puts her in a different class. The trap 4 draw is below average, but when the quality gap is this wide, draw becomes a secondary concern.
