How the Hot Dogs Strategy Actually Works
The Hot Dogs strategy is one of the most popular features on RateThatDog, and for good reason. It's built on a simple but powerful idea: find dogs with a composite score of 60 or above that have no obvious rival in their race.
What does 'no obvious rival' mean? It means the dog is the only runner in the race with a composite score above 60, and it's ahead of the next-best dog by a meaningful margin. This gives us confidence that the dog genuinely stands out.
Since we refined our performance ratings in late March, the Hot Dogs have been hitting at an impressive strike rate. The composite score acts as the initial filter — combining form with suitability — to surface dogs that are both in good form AND well suited to today's conditions.
To get the most from Hot Dogs, check the page early in the day before the first races. The picks are generated as soon as the racecards are loaded and predictions are made. You'll see each dog's composite score, the gap to the next-best, and the race details.
Remember: Hot Dogs is a strategy, not a guarantee. We recommend level stakes and tracking your results over time. The beauty of the system is its consistency — it doesn't pick 50 dogs a day, it picks the standout few.
